Teach Me

Teach me the things
Of a world I do not know
And I’ll teach you the same
And away we will go

Teach me to dance like the old couples do
Teach me how to be lithe and long
And I’ll teach you to hike through the woods
With a stick, a whistle, and a song

Teach me to ponder in a candle-lit room
Teach me of quiet and of being lost in a book
And I’ll teach you to dig in the dirt
And how to catch three fish on one rusty old hook

Teach me female, the strong and the wit
Teach me the dainty, the tiny, the pink
And I’ll teach you the male, the swift and the sure
And I’ll teach you the crazy way that I think

Teach me the soft, the slow, the serene
Where time it slows to a stop
And I’ll teach you to savor each delicious flavor
Sewn from your very own crop

Teach me what it means to be beautiful and still
And honest and true from valley to hill
And teach you laughter and laziness I will
As we nap together beside the window sill

Teach me to enjoy the sounds of the city
Teach me to stop and ponder and wonder
And I’ll teach you the silence of the farm fields
And of snowstorms, old barns, and raw thunder

Teach me the ways of the blue and crimson
And I will teach you the green
And our colors will sing and dance
And combine to fill up the scene

Teach me the water, the earth and the heat
And I’ll teach you the seed and the light
Teach me the smile, the hope, and the hearth
And I will bid you a sweet good night!
