Ka Roimata o Hinehukatere

She called to me from across the sullen sea
So we fashioned a vessel
Of balsa and reed
My brother and I
And we sailed across the Pacific
Guided by the stars
And the currents of blue
And her voice so sweet in the night
Like wild things we were

It’s so nice to see you again
To dance with you once more
To gaze into your eyes
I have longed for these moments with you
Stolen in time
And we laugh together
And we pretend that this is not what it is
But it is
With my arms around you laughing in the night
Is the only place I ever want to be
Last night I dreamt of you
Your hair fallen in your face
After an evening of dancing
And discovery
And I woke up with tears in my eyes
But that is all I remember
I felt so close to you
Closer still now
But we are apart again

So that I might remember
In the years ahead
When I wonder back at our unity
Auckland, Matamata, Rotorua, Waitomo Caves, New Plymouth, Wanganui, Wellington
Picton, Westport, Hokitika, Franz Josef, Queenstown, Lake Tekapo, Christchurch

Ka Roimata o Hinehukatere
Unseen from your hiding place in the clouds
We were borne aloft by a giant butterfly
Over the mountain
Around the perimeter of your beauty
Then we touched down and basked in your ethereal quiet
Alone with the sun and the clouds
And the blue ice
And your pools and caves and streams
And rumbling rocks and treasures
Heaven on Earth
Ka Roimata o Hinehukatere

Ah my brother
We two are lucky souls
To have shared it together
